The Big House Theatre
The Big House is a charitable theatre company, founded with one simple mission: to enable care-affected young people to fulfill their potential. Our programmes work to build their self-esteem and develop the skills and resilience they need to lead independent lives. To our members, The Big House is a safe space, advocate, mentor and “family”, teaching life and employment skills, resilience and creativity.
Founded in 2012, The Big House was built on real-world insight and a deep understanding of systemic
disadvantage. Our CEO/Artistic Director, Maggie Norris, is a professional creative who found herself delivering theatre in prisons. There she found the stark overrepresentation of care leavers in the justice system: nearly 50% of under 21 youth offenders are care leavers and over 68% of youth offenders re-offend within a year (Homes for Good, 2023). The Big House breaks this cycle of generational offending, with only 1% of our members ever (re)offending.
