Kakilang 自己人
Kakilang 自己人 is a non-profit Arts Council-funded National Portfolio Organisation (NPO) arts charity that produces and presents world-class interdisciplinary art from a wide spectrum of Southeast and East Asian voices. This includes theatre, visual arts, dance, technology-based projects, community programmes, and artist development programmes. We are based in London and operate across the UK, and we do some international work. We have partnered with many great institutions such the Barbican, Southbank Centre, York Theatre Royal, and Cambridge Junction, as well as working with more grassroots organisations, including Hackney Chinese Community Centre, and On Your Side and End Violence and Racism Against ESEA (East and Southeast Asian) Communities charities.
Kakilang (自己人), meaning ‘one of us’ in the Hokkien dialect, embodies the sense of kinship and connection we foster within East and Southeast Asian diasporic communities. For us, Kakilang represents people coming together through art, championing diverse voices and shared experiences.
We are delighted to receive support from the Lightbulb Trust to enable us to deliver 4 youth programmes dedicated to empowering young ESEA communities through the arts. We will do this by equipping these young people with various tools for creative expression and storytelling, including music, dance, visual arts, performing arts, and creative technology skills. In the process, we look forward to providing paid work to talented and mainly ESEA practitioners to help them sustain viable careers in the arts.
