Shannon Trust
Shannon Trust is a charity working in all prisons across England, Wales and Northern Ireland, helping people in prison to learn to read. The charity uses a bespoke phonics-based reading programme called Turning Pages, delivered by trained peer mentors, to teach prisoners who cannot read to learn to do so.
Around 50% of people entering prison struggle with reading, and illiteracy has clear implications for offending rates and future rehabilitation. With the help from the Lightbulb Trust, Shannon Trust are now working on the digitisation of Turning Pages and the expansion of its work into the community, with the aim of reaching many more people to ensure nobody is left out of learning, through the transformational power of reading.
