Power to Connect
Power to Connect is working to deliver digital equality in Wandsworth, London. They believe that every young person should have the same access to connectivity, technology and skills, irrespective of their background.
Set up as a direct response to school closures at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, Power to Connect set out to raise awareness of digital exclusion and to support local families across Wandsworth who were struggling to access home-schooling during the lockdowns. Over 2 years on, they have collected, refurbished, and delivered over 2,000 devices to 80 schools and 17 community organisations in the borough. They have also delivered digital skills training to parents and carers to ensure children are getting the most of their devices at home and navigating the online world safely and securely.
Evidence gathered since the pandemic shows that there has been a permanent change in the use of online for education and that young people from disadvantaged backgrounds are more likely to be significantly affected by digital exclusion which may make existing inequalities worse. With over 10,385 children living in low-income households in Wandsworth, The Lightbulb Trust is supporting Power to Connect’s ongoing work to continue providing technology and skills to parts of the community that are digitally excluded, helping to close the digital divide and ensuring no young person is left behind through lack of hardware or digital skills.
