ClementJames Centre
The ClementJames Centre is an award-winning community centre based in North Kensington. They have been working in the local community for over 40 years, providing practical and pastoral support through four aligned programmes: Children and Young People’s Education, Wellbeing and Support, Adult Learning, and Employment Support. Their aim is to help people to reach their potential and live fulfilled lives, reducing poverty, unemployment and isolation in the local area.
Many local young people are facing multiple complex challenges such as poverty and the impact of grief and trauma, challenges further exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic, leaving them with low confidence and feelings of isolation, which puts them at an increased risk of disengaging from education.
There is a clear local need for broad support for young people and their families facing exclusion from the earliest stages possible to reduce the impact of these on individuals and the borough as a whole. Locally, only 36% of students placed outside mainstream education left school with at least one good GCSE in 2019, and 9 in 10 young men and three quarters of young women in custody having been excluded from school at some point.
The Lightbulb Trust is supporting The ClementJames Centre’s early intervention work which supports young people at risk of school exclusion at the earliest stage possible through a comprehensive programme of educational, pastoral and advocacy based support to build their confidence, communication skills and emotional resilience to keep them engaged with education. Funding will support our dedicated Children and Young People’s Programme Coordinator who oversees this programme alongside building relationships with families and schools and working to contribute to local understanding of the challenges facing young people.
