Caxton Youth Organisation
Caxton Youth Organisation aims to shape a more inclusive society free from disabling barriers where all young people are able to lead happy, healthy and independent lives. Established in 1948, Caxton Youth Organisation is the only specialist youth club in Westminster (London) for young people with learning disabilities aged 11 to 25. They offer a safe, welcoming and inclusive space in the community where disabled young people can be themselves, make friends, and build confidence. Their team of youth workers provide holistic, long-term and person-centred support which focuses on enabling young people to reach their individual goals. Activities take place at Caxton Youth Club, in the community, and an outdoor base in Ripley, Surrey.
“I’m proud of having a disability. I like Caxton as I get to be me. At other youth clubs it’s not like that.” Caxton member
“Without Caxton my son would never have gained the relevant social skills and friendships that have been so vital to his adolescent years.” Parent
For almost 75 years, Caxton have opened their doors to young people in the area and throughout this time they have continually adapted and evolved to meet the needs of the surrounding community, helping generations of young people to take small steps which turn out to be big strides. Lightbulb Trust’s support will enable the continued development of Caxton’s vital services and make more of these big strides possible for at least 60 disabled young people in Westminster in the next year. In particular, Caxton will focus on developing a more youth-led service and on growing partnerships across the community to address disabling barriers in society, with young people at the heart of driving this social change.
